Before the
prescription

A plain-language guide · U.S. care

A form does not finish the visit.

A form about your health can start the visit. Leave room to talk about your answers and ask questions.

The misconception

Finishing the form means the prescription is settled.

Rethink the semaglutide shortcut

An assessment comes before the decision.

A visit can take different forms

Telehealth is care given by video, phone or an online exchange.

For first visits, the state medical boards' group allowed online care as of September 2026 if the person providing it could properly assess your health; each state's rules still mattered. a

A form can begin the visit if the person reviewing it can ask you more questions; a set of tick boxes with no further exchange is different. a

Expect room for questions

A prescription decision needs more than a fixed set of answers on a form, says the state medical boards' group. a

That guidance also calls for a way for you to put more questions to the person assessing your health. b

Before paying, ask how to discuss your answers and how to reach the person who handles your care afterward.

Have your own notes ready

Write down what you want help with. Bring the names of medicines you take and the health history you want to discuss.

During a semaglutide health review, expect a question about a rare cancer called 'medullary thyroid cancer' in your own or your family's medical history. c

Other history to discuss includes serious stomach problems and a past illness recorded as 'pancreatitis', or pancreas inflammation. Also discuss gallstones or other gallbladder trouble, eye damage from diabetes, pregnancy plans and planned surgery. c

If an old diagnosis or a family cancer name is unclear, bring any records you have and ask for help checking the full name.

An online review may lead elsewhere

When the review calls for an in-person test or examination, medical-board guidance requires the person providing care to arrange it or refer you elsewhere. a

Ask what happens if the next step is an in-person visit rather than a prescription.
