The misconception

All semaglutide products are the same treatment.

Rethink the semaglutide shortcut

A shared ingredient can have different approved uses.

Ingredient, brand, shot or pill

Semaglutide is the ingredient that does the work; semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) appears under different brand names. c

As of September 2026, both Ozempic and Wegovy had injection and tablet forms. c

An injection is a shot. A tablet is a pill. Ask for the full product name rather than just the ingredient.

The official medicine information is often called the drug label. It identifies which uses the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal drug agency, has approved. a

The diabetes name

As of September 2026, Ozempic injection had approval for treating adults with type 2 diabetes. This condition involves high blood sugar. a

It had no approval for weight loss. a

An approved medicine can legally be prescribed for another use; this is called off-label prescribing. a

Prescribing Ozempic injection for weight loss does not give it FDA approval for that use. a

The weight-management name

As of September 2026, Wegovy was approved to help adults with obesity, or excess weight with a related health problem, lose weight and keep it off. b

Obesity is the medical word for excess body fat that affects health.

The official medicine information pairs that use with eating fewer calories and being more active. b

Ask why the medicine's approved use fits the problem you want help with.

Older pill names can cause confusion

In January 2026, the newer diabetes tablet sold as Rybelsus was renamed Ozempic tablets. c

In September 2026, FDA records said the older Rybelsus tablets would stop being supplied and would be replaced by Ozempic tablets. The record gave no date for this change. c

That record did not say the older tablets were already unavailable. c

If you take Rybelsus, ask the person writing your prescription or your pharmacist how the change affects your refills.

When an article says only 'the semaglutide pill', ask which product it means.
